Operations Menu - Goods Receipt - Generate Serial No.

This page describes the 'Generate Serial No.' function on the Operations menu in the Goods Receipt record window. If you are using iOS or Android, the 'Generate Serial No.' function is on the Tools menu (with 'wrench' icon).

---

The 'Generate Serial No.' function can be useful when you receive a large quantity of a Serial Numbered Item into stock and you need to enter many consecutive Serial Numbers. It will be used most often by companies that generate their own serial numbers.

To use this function, first enter the Item Number in the appropriate number of rows in a Goods Receipt and specify the lowest Serial Number in the first row. Then select the 'Generate Serial No.' function from the Operations menu (Windows/macOS) or Tools menu (iOS/Android): the remaining rows will gain a Serial Number, each incremented from the previous row by one. If you do not enter the lowest Serial Number in the first row, the function will find the highest Serial Number that you have previously received in to stock and increment from there.

If you need the generated Serial Numbers to follow a particular format (e.g. if they must contain the same number of characters, start with Item Numbers or dates, etc), use the Serial Number Tracking setting. If you change the format specified in the Serial Number Tracking setting, the new format will only be used for Serial Numbers for new Items (Items for which you have not recorded any Serial Numbers). New Serial Numbers for older Items will continue to use the old format.
