Printers - Setting up a Print Server

In some larger installations it can be useful to set up a print server to look after the printing of forms. You can do this using a dedicated Standard ERP client. This client will periodically interrogate the data server for print jobs. When you print a form, it will be held momentarily on the data server until it is fetched by the print server. The print server will then look after communications with the printer, allowing the data server to be made available for the next data processing task more quickly.

The Standard ERP client that will act as the print server can run on a dedicated machine but it can also be run on one of the other client machines. Each print server can be connected to several printers .

To configure a Standard ERP print server, follow these steps:

Main Data Server

  1. Log in to the server as a user belonging to an Access Group that explicitly grants full access to the Technics module.

  2. Change to the Technics module using the [Switch Module] button in the Home Screen and open the Program Mode register.

  3. Complete the 'Print Server' card as follows:

    Accept Print Servers on Port
Specify here the port to which print server clients will connect.

    Print Server Shared Secret
The Print Server Shared Secret is an arbitrary string that you should enter here and on each of the print server clients (step 10 below). This string should be made up of at least ten characters.

  4. Save the changes that you have made to the Program Mode register. There is no need to restart the server.

Print Server

  1. Following the instructions on the Creating a New Database - Single-user page and using the Standard ERP client application, create the new database that is to act as the print server . Only one Company is necessary. Create a user record for the user who will monitor the print server (this can be you or another user in your Standard ERP system, using your or their usual Standard ID).

  2. Log in to the new database using the user account created in the previous step, change to the User Settings module and open the Local Machine setting.

  3. Use the Code field to assign a unique identification Code (the "Local Machine Code") to the print server and save:

  4. Change to the System module, open the Configuration setting and ensure that the Server option is selected on the 'Basic' card:

Selecting the Server option will allow you to change to the Technics module in the next step.

  5. Change to the Technics module and open the Program Mode register.

  6. Complete the 'Print Server' card as follows:

    Connect as Print Server
You must select this option in the print server database to ensure it will periodically interrogate the main data server for print jobs.

    Connect to Server IP
Specify here the IP address of the main data server machine.

    Port
Enter the Server Port specified on the 'Server' card in the Program Mode register on the main data server.

    Print Server Shared Secret
Enter here the Print Server Shared Secret that you entered on the main data server in step 3 above.

  7. Save the changes that you have made to the Program Mode register. Providing you selected the Connect as Print Server option, the print server will connect to the main data server immediately.

  8. If you need to close the print server client and restart it for any reason, continue using the Standard ERP client application (not the server or slave) to open the print server database.

Specifying that Forms should be printed on the Print Server

  1. Return to the client that you used for steps 1-4 above or log in again. You should log in as a user with access to the System module. For step 15, you should be the only user logged in.

  2. Change to the System module and open the Printers setting.

  3. List the print servers on separate rows in the setting as follows:

    Code
Enter here an arbitrary unique identifying code for each print server.

    Print Server Machine Code
Specify here the Local Machine Code of each print server (as specified on each print server in step 7 above).

Use Named Printer (Print Server only)
Specify the exact name of the printer(s) to the print server machine.

  4. When the Printers setting is complete, save it by clicking the [Save] button (Windows/macOS) or by tapping √ (iOS/Android).

  5. Finally, following the instructions on the Printing Forms page, go to the 'Define Form' window for each form that is to be printed through a print server and specify the Code of the appropriate print server in the Printer field (i.e. the Code from the Printers setting specifued in step 15 above).
